Driver Qualification Card Renewal

Since 2009 anyone who wants to drive professionally must have a valid Driver Qualification Card.

Initial CPC

New drivers receive their first Driver Qualification Card upon completion of their initial CPC training; however, the clock starts ticking from the cards issue date.

Plan Ahead

Anyone caught driving without an up-to-date DQC can be fined up to £1000, so it pays to plan and get organised for your periodic CPC training.

35 Hours

Over the next 5 years, you must complete 35 hours of training for your periodic CPC. Ideally, this would be spread over 5 years with 7 hours of training yearly.

The initial Driver CPC is for new drivers who have acquired their LGV / HGV licence and completed all 4 modules that go into the initial CPC training. After that, they must complete periodic training every 5 years to maintain their licence. The periodic CPC applies to all professional drivers of large vehicles who drive professionally.

The number of hours of periodic training is 35. The periodic CPC certificate is valid for 5 years.

The purpose of the periodic CPC is to:

– reinforce and update the knowledge and skills of professional drivers

– ensure that they are up to date with changes in technology, working practices and the law

– promote road safety

– reduce the risk of accidents involving large goods vehicles.
